Hole Adjacent to Battery

Body

Vehicle Information: Model: 911; Year: 1986; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 73.6K;

The area adjacent to the battery is worn though such that the previous owner had a piece of duct tape over a hole about the size of z half dollar. I see no obvious evidence of corrosion on the panel, although I am concerned as to what may have caused the hole. Is this a common problem in mid 80s 911s? Is there any chance it could be from something as simple as the battery chafing the panel? How do I look into this more throughly I will get a picture to you if possible.Thanks for your help.
