Cables and Controls

The trip and mileage odometer in my 1974 911 vehicle recently stopped working. The speedometer still works fine. When I originally bought the car new in May 1974 the trip indicator had some signs of oil residue around that area and when I reset it to zero was always difficult to turn. I asked the dealership about it and they said not to worry about it as long as everything worked. I can still turn the trip gauge using the manual reset knob and when I take it through the whole cyle zero to 999 cycle it will add mileage to the odometer. The two gauges, odometer and trip meter must be connected and related to the functioning of each other. I noticed in the Porsche Panorama an advertiser Palo Alto Speedometer Inc. who I called and they said they could fix it in 7-10 days. I know nothing about this repair so I would appreciate your input and suggestions. I've dealt with a local Porsche mechanic who said in the spring he would remove it, send it out for repair and that I could still drive the car. Since this just happened I wanted to get it corrected immediately so my mileage will remain accurate. As you can till I drive the car very seldom and maintain it in awesome condition. I am the original and only owner of this vehicle. Any idea what a repair of this nature would cost? This is the first time I have contacted our Porsche tech area at the Panorama magazine for assistance. Thanks so much for your help and suggestions.
