How hot is hot?

Vehicle Information: Model (914/4, 914/6): 914/4; Year: 1976; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.0 912E; Total Mileage: 202000;

I'm new to the 912E (stock, FI) and have read they run "hot." In typical 85+ day in Southern Arizona, with waiting time in line at intersections, it runs with the needle just to the right of top center. Since there are no numbers (would you have a left, first line green zone, top center green zone, three quarters green zone, line red conversion into F/C?), what is a "good" range for this engine when the goal is a daily driver with a long life? Are you aware of any aftermarket oil coolers (like the aluminum version for 912's) that would help reduce temperature? Would removal of smog equipment and plugging the air intakes in the heads be a wise modification (no smog test in Southern AZ) or leave well-enough alone? Preparing for another hot summer with a new (old) 912E.
