How should oil level be measured?

Vehicle Information: Year: 2002; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 L; Total Mileage: 1432;

The manual states to check oil when the engine is at temperature (warm). Following these directions the electronic oil level guage.indicates anywhere from 1 to 4 bars from full. If I check it first thing in the morning (engine cold-car has set all night) enough time has passed to allow complete drainage of oil into the pan. The electronic oil guage will now show completely full. Should I go by the manual and check the oil level while the engine is warm and thus add additional oil or check the oil after the car has set all night and believe the gauge that I do not require any oil? The dip stick seems to match the electronic gauge based on if the engine is warm or cold.
