Hydraulic Tensioner Testing

Engine

I have recently found out that the timing chains have stretched and one of the hydraulic tensioners has failed. The diagnosis was made by a reputable independant mechanic.I am aware of the fact that hydraulic tensioners rarely fail. So, before replacing one I would like to test them both to be sure. What is the best method to verify that they are working properly? Also, would you recommend upgrading the tensioner sprocket arms to the later design or is this an area where the original pieces are adequate?David (VNTGSPD)
