I could not avoid hitting a post on the road and the rail under the driver side of the car appears to have been damaged. Is this something to worry about?

While driving on the highway, I was boxed in by another car and ran over a metal bar. My car went over it and I could hear and feel it hit behind the front wheel on the driver"s side and then went over it with the back wheel. Thankfully, nothing is leaking but it appears that a rail on the underside of the car, nearest the driver side, may have been bent and damaged. My question is what is the purpose of this rail and what should I do about it? Thanks.
