Ignition Timing

I have read several articles on ignition timing adjustment. They all say to disconnect the vacuum line to distributor when adjusting timing. On my 911SC there are two lines attached to the distributor. One in the traditional location and one on the backside of the vacuum advance unit. When I disconnect the line to the back side of the unit it changes the idle speed. Should I set the idle back to 1000 rpm when both lines are disconnected and then check it with the timing light? No where does it mention to disconnect that second vacuum line. I witnessed a Porsche tech set the timing on a 911SC and he never disconected that second line. What is the right way?
