I have a '72 914-6 conversion (done about 15 years ago) with a 2.2 911S motor using 40 IDAs. The ignition system uses a bosch blue coil, an Allison (similar to Crain) "pointless" system (with a separate modulator for the "pointless" system). The modulator is wired thru a Bosch 3 pin CD unit. Having previously experienced a Bosch CD unit failure about 10 years ago I believe that the replacement is also in the process of failure as the engine has recently "shut down" on a couple of occations, although it has restarted. The Allison unit can be wired directly to the coil, bypassing the CD unit and the engine starts and seems to run fine. My question is, do I need the CD unit with my current set up (smog exempt) and if so can I get a rebuilt unit (or send mine out)? I would prefer to stay with the Bosch unit as it is unclear that the MSD unit is compatible with the Allison set up and the Permatune unit apparently is not all that reliable. Thanks for your help.
