Length of reverse light switch activating pin

Transmission and Clutch

Model: Carrera, Year:1986, Mileage:90k, Type of use:Street use only
My reverse lights dont work. The lights come on when I jump the wires at the switch. The activating pin does move outward when the transmission is put in reverse. The switch contacts close when I mimic the activating pin. The problem is that the activating pin does not push the switch contact far enough. I question wether the problem lies with the (expensive) switch (needs too much stroke to activate) or with the pin (too short). What is the proper length of the activating pin ?ThanksRichard
