Missing plug for transmission

Vehicle Information: Year: 1998; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.5; Total Mileage: 80,000; Transmission: Manual;

Last week my son was driving his 98 and the car made a noise and stopped shifting in low and second. He came home. I thought the cable had come loose, but the next day saw fluid under the engine. Drove the car to the local foreign car mechanic. He said a shaft, bolt or plug came loose that holds the 1 and 2 gear cable to transmision - it fits in and holds the fork. Tried to get the part from the local Porsche dealer in Tampa and said did not have the $40 part(s) and could not get it, but did for a 2000 year but it was a different number. Said we needed a new transmission, but that Audi A-4 part would work. Audi dealer is same company and would not cooperate. Right now we are stuck and I am seriously dissapointed with local dealer (Reeves). Can you please give me any advice on where or how to find this part? Thanks.
