Oil in Coolant

Model: 996, Year:1999, Mileage:103000, Type of use:Street use only
I discovered oil in the coolant, so tried to resolve by replacing the oil / coolant heat exchanger. After flushing the cooling system several times, more oil has appeared in the coolant. I have heard that a cracked head is the next most likely cause. Before I remove the engine, are there any other things I should check. With this many miles should I bite the bullet and replace the engine now. I have not had the car that long, so don't know it's history. I am going to attempt the work myself as I have removed and worked on engines on other vehicles, but not Porsche. Thanks for your help.
