oil filter

Vehicle Information: Year: 2001; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2; Total Mileage: 35k;

A friend and I were discussing the trend back to the "old fashioned" cartridge oil filters that Porsche has been using the last few years. I mentioned that my wife's 2004 Cadillac CTS had such a filter, as well. These were common 40 years ago and most of us adapted the old engines to use spin-on filters. The new cartridges are two to three times as costly as the spin-ons and more aggravating to change, as well. They are also much more likely to be damaged in transit and storage. What do you believe was the motivating factor in this regression back to oldtechnology? My guess is that pressure from environmentalists to reduce landfill pollution may be behind it. Thanks!
