Oil level gauge

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 C4; Year: 1990; Body Type: Convertible; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.6; Total Mileage: 60k;

My oil level indicator is near or in the "red zone"; however, a manual check of the oil level is half-way between the hash marks on the dip stick, with the car at normal operating temp and at idle on level ground. Question: Is this a normal reading on the gauge with the amount of oil in the resevoir or is the gauge possibly defective?
