oil overfill

Engine

Model: Carrera Targa, Year:1987, Mileage:55,000, Type of use:Street use only
I have a 1987 3.2 Carrera. Unfortunately I let an inexperienced shop belonging to a friend do an oil change for me. He seems to have overfilled it and it is smoking a lot. I am going back to him with the correct oil change instructions, I think he did not drain the tank, only the crankcase. Hopefully he will get it right this time. In the meantime, have we damaged the engine? So far it seems to be running OK, just smoking a lot. In 2010 you answered a similar question but did not answer the engine damage question. Thank you.
