oil pressure

Vehicle Information: Year: 2003; Engine (Size, Modifications): Turbo; Total Mileage: 22k;

On a recent trip, hwy driving, the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero and the computer readout indicated oil pressure failure. Immediately I shifted into neutral and dropped the engine down to idle, at which time the pressure returned to 20lbs. I parked the car and performed the oil level test and all was OK. Accelerating back up, the gauge read approx. 50lbs. and held steady for quite some time then, at around 2600rpm it dropped to zero, only to repeat the above senario many times again. The dealer repair was to replace the sender unit, problem solved. My question: Why didn't the red "idiot" light come on? Does it rely on another means to sense low or no oil pressure? Thanks!
