I just sent this same question, but it didn't appear to go through. If it did I apologize for he repetition. What I had previously described as a bullet casing is actually a hollow one and a half inch tube that has a lip on one end and sits inside the top of the three and a half inch spring. When I insert them I have to use considerable pressure to compress the spring enough to engage the threads to tighten. However, how do I determine if the piston is moving freely, or if there is one in there at all? I have been able to insert a ten inch metal rod without encountering any resistance.
