Petronix point eliminator start problem


Vehicle Information: Model: E; Year: 1970; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.2; Total Mileage: 68,000;

On the basis that there is no stupid questions, just stupid answers: here is my question. I am a neophyte on Porsche, this being my first. I have attempted to do one of the simpler modifications, install a Pertronix Ignitor system. The first attempt, I was not supplied with the module hold down nuts, but thought I would attempt to start it to see if I had the rest of the system correct (in hindsight not a good move), not knowing the importance of grounding the module. Obviously failed. The second attempt using the now supplied nuts ended with the same no-start. I tried a long line from 12V battery direct to module to eliminate a low voltage coil problem, again no start. A mechanic suggested that I may have "fried" the module attempting to start without proper ground. Do you think this might have happened? Would the sanding down of the module bottom and base help a no-start scenario?
