proper venting for Interstate battery

Electrical and Electronic

Model: 911, Year:1989, Mileage:115500, Type of use:Street use only
winter storage caused battery to 'run'down, removed it to find 'duct tape' covering hole the size of a 'silver dollar' in the inner fender next to the battery vent! Had battery tested, 5 years old...marginal at best, bought another Interstate with vent kit, installed battery and ran vent tubing through rubber grommet to the outside...Is this the proper way to vent these batteries? Wondering why old battery(s)were never vented, especially after corrosive hole was found? Two high quality Porsche shops have worked on the car, nothing mentioned about need? to vent...Please advise...Thank you, Paul Humphrey
