Putting things "to sleep'

In the January 2014 Panorama, an answer to a trickle charging question ended with advise to lock and set the alarm "to completely put the vehicle to sleep." I've not been locking my car thinking that there was no need to have the alarm system active in my garage. My question is: what systems "go to sleep" when the vehicle is locked with the alarm set as opposed to leaving the vehicle unlocked? Thanks.
