Rear end noise

Transmission

Vehicle Information: Model: 911s; Year: 1976; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 76000;

I have noticed a sound that appears to be coming from the rearend of my 1976 911. It only occurs when I am going slowly in 4th or 5th gear. If I go to full or almost full throttle there is a thunk-thunk -thunk sound from the rearend that disappears when my speed increases and I get off the throttle a bit. I can't hear it with coasting or in lower gears. I was thinking this might be related to my CV joints but I'm unsure how to test them especially since I can't tell which side the noise comes from. I'd appreciate your assistance since I would rather not take both off if there is an easier way to determine the cause.
