rear window glass, dual heat conversion

As the glass is out for a repaint, I am wanting to correct an inoperative rear defog system. As best as I can tell from the manuals and previous questions, the car came with a single heat glass. It definitely has the dual heat panel now with 6 terminals and the dash switch and relay for dual heat. The wiring harness does not seem to match anything, with red/black, red/white and a somewhat mutilated wire that appears to be ground (and was not connected!) all coming up in the driver side rear corner of the package shelf. Was this the way the reported update kit was designed? I can create the harness sections needed to take the grounds to the right side and the jumpers for the upper wire section in the glass, but am hesitant to do that if what is in the car is a home brew solution instead of a well designed factory kit. Observations & advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
