Removing Plastic Protection on Exterior Paint

Vehicle Information: Model: 911; Year: 1986; Body Type: Targa; Total Mileage: 29,600;

I recently bought a 1986 911 targa that is all original. The paint is in great shape. The original owner had the clear protective covering strip (not sure of the exact name) put on the front trunk area to protect from rock chips. It is also under the two front headlights and on both side mirrors. My question is will this protect from chips but damage/discolor the area that is covered? Also, if I decide to remove it, how do I go about removing it safely (without removing or damaging the black paint).
