Replace passenger side transmission for the convertible top

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 (C-2 / 964); Year: 1991; Body Type: Convertible; Engine (type, size, modifications): Stock 6 cyl - no modifications; Total Mileage: 88,000;

I understand from my mechanic that I need to rebuild or replace the passenger side transmission for the convertible top tofunction properly. I've have had problems for the past year ... noise followed by the top malfuntioning. I had it fixed once, but lasted less than 3 months. For a economical fix I decided to purchase a used transmission. 1. Did I make a wise decision?2. Can I replace this part by myseld?3. What steps are involved?4. Should I replace while the top is up?5. Are there any complexities that I should be aware of?6. Is there documention on this procedure that I can lay my hands on without purchasing a repair manual?Your time and attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.Kind regards,Bill oakley
