reverse gate

Transmission and Clutch

Model: 993, Year:1997, Mileage:72,000, Type of use:Both Street & Track
In a couple of PCA driving events I have been trying to downshift from 3rd to 2nd and have apparently pulled the shifter pretty hard to the left during the downshift, and as a result it has gone into the horizontal part of the gate for reverse (not actually into reverse gear, but just into that horizontal part of the "H" pattern required to access reverse). I would expect there should be a detent or something to keep this from happening and to guide the shifter from third past the reverse gate into second, even if the driver is overly enthusiastic during the downshift. I have asked around and a couple of other 993 owners have had similar experiences. Is there a mechanical fix or am I just a clod with the gear lever? Thanks.
