rocker Arm play in rebuilt 914 4 2.1

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model (914/4, 914/6): 914/4; Year: 1974; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.1, webbers, ebs cam; Total Mileage: ? - 500 on engine;

We recently rebuilt a 2.0 4 to a 2.1 using JE pistons, ebs cam matched to webber 40mm carbs. All went really well until about 500 miles when a valve noise was noticed. On adjustment at 500 miles intakes 2 and 4 (same cam lobe, opposite sides)a .25 in gap was found; rockers on those two also had about .25 in play. This was not found on the other six. We readjusted, started the engine and the gap immediately reverted from 15/1000 to about 30/1000s. We have replaced the pushrods and rocker assemblies and found the problem to be the same. Also did compression check to rule out valve or guide - no problems noted. It's driving us and a local porsche mechanic nuts - any ideas as to what's going on w/ this?
