Running motor during winter

Vehicle Information: Model: 911; Year: 1988; Body Type: Targa; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.4L with JE 11:1 compression pistons; Total Mileage: 120,000;

Due to bad weather conditions this year I have not been able to get the car out and drive it for a couple of months. I have heard that it is not good to run these engines for short periods of time but I don't like just letting it sit for such a long period of time. Would it be better for the engine to start it occassionally and let it run long enough to come up to temperature, even though I can't drive it, or wait until I can get it out on the road? I also have a 1995 993. Would your recommendation be the same for both cars? Thanks for your help.
