SC engine overheat damage

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 SC; Year: 1979; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 150,000;

My fan belt broke, I continued to drive about 4 miles home watching the temp gauge. It never approached hot (middle of gauge). Got home, smoke from engine bay and oil was actually boiling/bubbling and continued for 10 minutes. So I guess the gauge was broken but never knew that.Replaced belt. Car has no power and sputters with very rought idle. Clearly is not the car it was before the incident. What damage might I have done? Should I just do an entire engine rebuild/replacement instead of trying to determine what I did to the engine & fix it piecemeal.
