setting 914 timing


Vehicle Information: Model (914/4, 914/6): 914/4; Year: 1974; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.0; Total Mileage: 123,000;

I replaced the points with a Pertronix unit and have been unable to get the timing anywhere near spec. After warming the engine up, disconnecting the vacuum hose from the advance unit, and revving to about 3500 RPM, the 27 degree mark is about 1-2 vanes shy of the timing notch, regardless of distributor position. Static timing appears good, because with the engine at TDC, the rotor is pointed at the #1 cylinder mark and the distributor driveshaft notch is at about a 12 degree angle per the Haynes manual. What am I missing? Should I put the points back on?
