Short Shifter Problems in a 79' SC coupe

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 SC ; Year: 1979; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 74,528;

I recently purchased a 79 SC coupe and am having problems engaging 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears. There is no positive feel in these gears like there is in 2nd, 4th and Reverse, which click in. 3rd is the worst, usually feeling as though the shifter will pop out of the gear if I take my hand off the lever. The individual I purchased the car off of said he had his mechanic install a short shift kit in the car to accommodate the wider aftermarket Recaro seats. He did not know what brand shifter was installed, but it looks to me like the factory kit. I have read the other postings about the issues concerning the short shift kits and the increased amount of force required to engage the gears. Considering the problems I am having are consistently in the gears with a forward throw, it seems to make sense the shifter is the culprit. Could the shifter linkage be contributing though to this problem? In order to put the shifter back to original, do I have to change the entire assembly from the base up? Or can I just exchange the lever, carrier plate, springs, and shift guide? Thank you for your time and help in advance.
