Slight rubbing on the inside of steering wheel column cover

Interior

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Cab; Year: 1984; Body Type: Convertible; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2; Total Mileage: 42700;

When turning the car's (three spoke)steering wheel I hear a slight plastic on plastic rubbing just below the steering wheel. Drivability is not affected. If I firmly depress the plastic steering column cover from the bottom with one hand and turn the wheel with the other the problem goes away. It appears that if I could remove the the steerig column cover, a two piece assembly (top and bottom),located just forward from the dash, I could better assess the problem. I removed what appear to be the two small cover screws left and right but still can not remove the covers. Seems like something under the covers has come loose. please advise.
