Spare Wheel - Integral Part of Crush Zone ?

This is a general question across models/years.A discussion arose a while back on Rennlist that stumped the Board. It has been suggested by some that the spare tire be removed for DEs. I've always thought the spare tire was an integral part of the progressive frontal (or rear depending on model) crush zone & therefore was a safety item best left in place for a street car. Is that just folklore or is there any truth to it? Has Porsche addressed this question? So far, no one has found an authoritative answer.
