Spring attached to magnetic drain plug

Transmission

This is my first Porsche that I purchased about a year ago. I changed the transmission fluid for the first time last night and when I cleaned the magnetic drain plug off I found a small spring attached to it. The spring is about 1/16" in diameter and about 2" long. I didn't notice any shifting problems, except for some slop, when I put the car away last fall, and I haven't had a chance to try it yet this year. Am I going to do damage to the trans if I drive it? What does this spring do?
