(wow, what a great site - I love the possible answers that pop up when you ask a question!)I have a 2003 996 C4S. I recently had a clunking sound coming from the front suspension that was diagnosed at a local non-dealer Porsche repair shop as being caused by loose front strut mounts. Weirdly, while waiting for the parts to come in, the sound resolved spontaneously. When asked why the shop felt the repair should still be done, they stated that there was significant lateral movement in the strut mounts and that they should be replaced. I put my winter tires on last week and took a look a the mounts; they look rock solid to me. However, one can move the springs a few millimeters laterally (only, of course, when the car is up on a jack). This movement is not present in the rear springs. My question is: is this normal, and if not, does it need to be replaced (ie. can it wait until the sound returns)? Thanks so much.
