Ed,Is there an alignment procedure for installing a new starter? I have a 1966 911 and when I received the car it had an intermittent starting problem where the starter would spin but the bendix or solenoid would not engage the starter with the flywheel so over the winter I replaced the starter with a rebuilt Bosch unit. When I tried this starter it sounded as if the starter gear was pushing against the flywheel and grinding it against the engine case. I dont know if this was actually happening but it sounded horrible and after a minute or so of trying the starter was dead. The second starter I installed was a compact high torque unit which started the motor on the first try. However this time it sounded as if the starter gear did not disengage from the flywheel and before I realized what was going on, starter #2 was dead. I am now ready to install starter #3, a rebuilt Bosch unit. Before I add to my starter graveyard of shame, what am I doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
