Starting problem

Vehicle Information: Model: 964 C2; Year: 1990; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): stock; Total Mileage: 78000;

Turned the key and heard a loud bang coming from the engine which did not start. Had car towed to mechanic who reported the problem as hydrolock. Car had been parked uncovered during two days of rain. He turned the engine over by physically turning the crank and then started it. It is running with no apparent problems. My question is why would this happen and do all 911's need to be covered during rain? Thanks, Tom
