Sway Bar Links

Fist off, thanks for the quick response to my last question regarding rear suspension noise. I pulled the rear wheels and thouroughly went over the rear suspension components, but found nothing obvious. I'll keep looking, but I gotta ask you; what's up with that rear sway bar? It seemed like a very cheap set-up. Specifically the sway bar diameter and the links. How can something like this, with flexible ball joints on the links, possibly add any control to the car? I'm not a suspension expert, but I've seen "beefier" setups on standard sedans.
