Tachometer issue

Vehicle Information: Model: 911T; Year: 1970; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2,2; Total Mileage: 160K;

Tach jumps only in cases exceeding 4K RPM and jumps up about 1K RPM upwards, and, generally appears to be moving too quickly up and down through the RPM's. Redlining/shutdown are correct in the RPM range. Does this sound like a job for the VDO shop or could it be a linkage. I am tempted to swap in a used Tach from our local Porsche swap meet- hmmm- this could be risk too! I have read the other postings- I don't think this is an engine issue.ThanksFDW
