tiptronic indicator

Electrical and Electronic

Model: 996, Year:1999, Mileage:57174, Type of use:Street use only
The tiptronic indicator on the dashboard flashes alternately between 4 gear and whatever position the gearshift is in. If it is in drive, the indicator flashes between 4th and drive; if in reverse, it flashes between 4th and reverse. The manual tiptronic function does not work and the transmission in the auto-mode will not shift beyond 4th gear. This fault can be cancelled by my repair shop using their diagnostic device and then the transmission will work correctly in both auto and manual for a period of time. As an example, I drove the vehicle back from the repair shop and then took it out for the evening and all was OK. Parked in the garage for two days , started up OK with no flashing lights initially, but while backing out, the flashing lights returned and transmission is relegated to 4th in auto and wont perform in manual. The diagnostic device indicates that a multifunction switch is at fault. Where is this switch? It was not readily evident to the repair shop. Thanks for your help.
