Torsion Bars Question

Suspension and Steering

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera Targa; Year: 1986; Body Type: Targa; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 with a chip; Total Mileage: 75000;

At our region charity auction I bought a set of torsion bars 20mm for the front, 30mm for the rear ostensibly from a wrecked slant nose turbo Carrera. I did read your past posting regarding using the 30mm size for a Carrera used much like mine where you felt a 28mm would be a better choice.When I examined the bars that I purchased I found that the splining on one end of the left rear bar had been slightly peaned or abraded and additionally that for some reason something had been welded close to that end of the bar but ground off which left a shallow defect. My question is: does this make that bar defective? If so it should be replaced with another 30mm left bar. Did Porsche ever use 30mm torsion bars in the Carrera and thus would they be the correct source of replacement for the damaged part. If not what would be a good source and does it matter if you use bars from different manufacturers? Most likely I would not use these parts but take them to Hershey to the swap meet and feel that I need to be knowledgable for potential buyers regarding the above condition. Thanks, Baxter
