Unusual sound coming from underneath car

Transmission

Vehicle Information: Year: 1984; Engine (size, modifications): none; Total Mileage: 98,000; Transmission type: Autotomatic;

While test driving a 1984 928S, I noticed a sound coming from below the car that can best be described as marbles or ping pong balls being whirled around in a bowl together. I am thinking this may be a sign that the torque tube needs to be rebuilt as the car has 98,000 miles and has never had the torque tube rebuilt. Is my assessment of this sound accurate and if so, what would one expect to pay to have the torque tube rebuilt by a 928 specialist? If not, what other possible problems may be present?
