valve cover gasket change

Model: 993, Year:1997, Mileage:104000, Type of use:Street use only
I need to change the lower valve cover gaskets. Can this be done without removing the exhaust manifolds? It looks to me like there is not enough clearance if I just remove the mufflers. I have changed the spark plugs before and I'm going to do it again while I change the cover gaskets. I'm also changing the spark plug wires since I don't know when they were last changed. The car had a top end overhaul at 60,000 miles and still burns very little oil, so I don't think this needs to be done yet again. Anything else I should consider doing while I'm in there? Are there any tricks I should know about while performing these procedures?
