voltage regulator

Vehicle Information: Model: porsche 911sc; Year: 1983; Body Type: Convertible; Total Mileage: 96000;

My alternator went bad. I was told that by simply changing the voltage regulator on the alternator is usually 9 time out of 10 is the reason why it went bad. is there any truth to this? I s it possible just to change it out or is it better to change the entire alternator?
