What is the correct procedure for removing water pump debris?

When a water pump bearing fails, the pump impeller makes contact with the block and sheds black plastic debris. What is the correct procedure to clean this debris from all the various, tiny, galleries in the engine as well as the oil cooler and cooling system? Without removing 100% of the debris, hot pockets will form, particularly in the head with devastating results.
